Typical foods and drinks

Bratislava, like all of Slovakia, has a rich gastronomic tradition that reflects its historical and cultural influences. Typical food and drinks in Bratislava are based on simple and tasty ingredients, often using potatoes, cabbage, meat and dairy products.

Bryndz dumplings - National dish of Slovakia. It consists of small potato dumplings (haluška) served with bryndza (Slovak sheep's cheese) and fried bacon.

Cabbage - Traditional cabbage soup prepared from sauerkraut, sausage, dried mushrooms and sometimes dried plums. It is often served during Christmas.

Roast duck with lox - Roast duck served with lox (potato pancakes) and steamed red cabbage.

Bratislava rolls - Traditional pastries filled with poppy or walnut filling. This is a sweet specialty of Bratislava since the times of Austria-Hungary.

Szeged goulash - Thick goulash made from pork, sauerkraut and cream. It comes from Hungarian cuisine, but it is also very popular in Slovakia.

Steamed buns - Yeasted dumplings filled with jam cooked in steam. They are served with butter, sugar and poppy seeds or cocoa.

Borovička - Traditional Slovak distillate from juniper berries. A strong alcoholic drink with a distinct taste of juniper.

Wine - Bratislava and its surroundings, especially the Lesser Carpathians, are known for their winemaking. Common varieties include white wines such as Riesling and Grüner Veltliner.

Zinčica - Whey drink. This by-product in the production of bryndza is traditionally served with bryndza dumplings.
